Instagram DMs not working?
Fixes to try, and why automatic DMs fail.
When Instagram DMs will not send, load or show new messages, the cause is usually your app, your connection or a temporary limit on your account. If you use an automation tool and its DMs are not arriving, the reasons are different and are listed further down.

Nine fixes for Instagram DMs that will not send or load
Try them in this order. Each one is quick, and most problems stop at one of the first four.
- Check whether Instagram is down for everyone. Search for an outage report before changing anything on your phone.
- Close the app fully and open it again.
- Update Instagram to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or turn flight mode on for ten seconds and off again.
- Log out of Instagram and log back in.
- Check Message requests and Hidden requests. New messages from people you do not follow can land there.
- On Android, clear the Instagram cache in your phone's app settings. Your account is not affected.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app.
- If a message says Try again later or Action blocked, stop sending for several hours. Instagram limits accounts that send too much too fast.
If only one person's messages fail, they may have blocked you, restricted your account or turned off message requests. You cannot change that from your side.
Why automatic DMs fail, and how to fix each
| What happened | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram needs to be reconnected | The saved login expired, or the password or permissions changed. | Reconnect your Instagram account. Messages that failed are not re-sent automatically. |
| A permission is missing | Instagram did not grant a permission the message needs. | Reconnect and tick every permission on the consent screen. |
| The 24-hour window had closed | You can message someone for 24 hours after they last messaged or commented. | Ask them to message you again. |
| That comment cannot get a private reply | Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days, and the comment must still exist. | Ask the person to comment again. |
| Instagram is limiting messages for a while | Too many messages went out in a short time. | Nothing to do. Waiting messages are sent when the limit lifts. |
| Instagram temporarily blocked sending | The account activity looked too fast or repetitive. | Pause for a few hours and vary the message text and links. |
| This person cannot receive your message | They may have blocked messages, restricted the account or turned off message requests. | Nothing you can change. |
These are the delivery reasons ReplyKaro's Ask AI assistant explains in plain words, with the one thing to do next, when you ask why a message failed.
How to stop automatic DMs from failing
- Only message people who interacted with you: a comment keyword, a Story reply or mention, or a message to you.
- Do not send the same text and link to a very large number of people at once. Use a short, varied message.
- Reconnect your Instagram account when the dashboard asks you to. An expired connection stops every automation.
- Watch your account health score and the live sending queue before and after a post goes viral.
Find out why one automatic DM did not arrive
- 1
Find the failed message
In the ReplyKaro dashboard, open DM automation and find the message marked failed.
- 2
Ask why it failed
Use Ask AI in the dashboard to explain the failure in plain words and the one thing to do next.
- 3
Reconnect if asked
If the reason says Instagram needs to be reconnected, reconnect your account and accept every permission.
- 4
Check the comment's age
If the comment is older than 7 days or was deleted, Instagram will not allow a private reply. Ask the person to comment again.
- 5
Test again
Comment your keyword from a second account and confirm the DM arrives.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my Instagram DMs not sending?
The most common causes are a weak connection, an out-of-date app, a temporary Instagram issue or a sending limit on your account. Update and restart the app, switch networks, and log out and back in.
Why are my automatic DMs not arriving?
Common reasons: the Instagram connection expired, the 24-hour messaging window closed, the comment is older than 7 days, or Instagram is limiting messages for a while. The dashboard marks failed messages, and Ask AI explains which reason applies.
How long does an Instagram action block last?
It varies. Stop sending for several hours and avoid repeating the same text and link to many people.
Can I auto DM someone who commented last month?
No. Instagram allows one private reply per comment within 7 days of the comment.
Do I need to reconnect Instagram often?
Only when the connection expires or you change your password or permissions. The dashboard tells you when.
Find out why a message failed
Connect Instagram, see which DMs failed, and ask the assistant why and what to do next.
